What is a “Cypher / Cypher Pedagogy”?

Cipher comes from the Arabic sifr, which means "nothing" or "zero", in the English language it is often spelled “cypher”. In the early 70’s in The Bronx NYC, multidisciplinary arts “cyphers” fused the elements of  Deejaying (Music and Technology), Breakdancing (Kinesthetic Expression), Emceeing (Vocal Expression), and Graffiti (Visual Art) with the innate wisdom found within all beings. It was these alchemical cyphers that birthed what later came to be known as HipHop culture. 

The power of the cypher lies in the essence of making “something from nothing” or bringing the intangible to reality—just like a thought or feeling can inspire you to hum a melody or write a poem. Cypher Pedagogy starts with us looking within ourselves to shift our external situational awareness, turn it inward and allow us to create change from this organic space. In these transformational times, “one size fits all” programming and broadcast, one-to-many experiences no longer work to engage, transform, and educate individuals, companies, and businesses.

“Cypher Pedagogy” is a solution oriented process of holding space for all parties involved to collectively problem solve, communicate ideas, set goals and implement strategies for achieving them.
